Welcome

Revelry Returns, Mark Your Calendars! Announcing The 2024 Seattle Anarchist Bookfair!

September 28th & 29th, 11am – 5pm

The VERA Project, at the corner of Warren and Republican

The Seattle Anarchist Bookfair bursts back into the scene, brimming with brilliance and boundless possibilities!

Following the success of last year’s book fair, the first in Seattle since before the COVID pandemic, we are excited to welcome you back to the VERA this fall for a weekend of workshops, encounters, arguments, meet-cutes, dialogues, diatribes, books and literature including anarchist theory, historical heresies, activist anthologies, and fictional fables. We hope to gather the anarchist publishers and zinesters you know and love as well as new emerging distros and projects from the PNW and beyond.

Whether you’re a seasoned subversive or a budding beacon of rebellion, this book bonanza beckons to all: the Seattle Anarchist Book Fair is an opportunity for old friends to come together, for new connections be made, and for those new to anarchy to have an opportunity to engage with the many and varied perspectives of what is called the Beautiful Idea. Discover new perspectives, defy dogma, and fuel your fiery fervor for freedom. Entry is always free. Childcare provided while you peruse.

New this year: After a first day of stimulating discussions and revolutionary revelations, get down at our all-ages benefit dance party on Saturday night at Black Lodge, 8-11pm!

If you are interested in volunteering your time or resources for the event, reach out to us at seattlebookfair at riseup dot net. More info as the event draws closer. See you there!

2024 Workshops

Workshops will be held in either the Conference Room (indicated by C), which is the room in the middle of the second floor of Vera with large glass windows, or in the Green Room (indicated by G), which is accessed through the main stage tabling room
Saturday
11:30am – 1pm
What Ever Happened to Venus? An Introduction to Biosphere Collapse – C
What is climate change, really? Is this the hottest summer in the last 100,000 years or the coldest year of the rest of our lives? Is there anything anarchists can do about any of this? Are anarchists again stuck in a reactive mode, struggling to maintain the few victories they’ve had? In this workshop, we’ll discuss the reality and science of climate change using the most current evidence-based scientific sources and frame the current situation in a variety of contexts: the geologic timescale, extinction events experienced by other hominids, and previous climate change events within human history. From this baseline, we’ll delve into proposed anarchist responses to the crisis and workshop what we can do on the local level to prepare for a reality that is likely more intense than most of us can imagine.
De-escalation with Puget Sound John Brown Gun Club – G
An interactive workshop addressing how emotional escalation affects us physically and psychologically – and some hands-on exercises in techniques for grounding self and others in the pursuit of baseline. The de-escalation workshop is a generalized training for all applications, designed initially for protest security.
1:30pm – 3pm
Obscenity at Home: The Trials of an Anarchist Community on Puget Sound, Presented by Louise Crowley Library – C
This talk tells the stories of the trials that anarchist publishers were subjected to in the early 1900s in the anarchist community at Home, Washington.
3:30pm – 5pm
The Fight for Trans Rights Against the US-backed Christofascists in Singapore – C
In Singapore, we are fighting against a looming Christofascist takeover
of the Singaporean state by Christofascists receiving help from their US counterparts, such as the Heritage Foundation. Singaporean Christofascists have adopted the language of Western transphobia and the tactics of Libs of TikTok to push for being trans to be classified as a mental illness. We desperately need international attention on this dire situation and anarchists around the world to support our struggle against fascism and for trans liberation. This will be a presentation about the ongoing struggle in Singapore, as well as how it relates to similar crackdowns on queer and trans rights in other parts of the world that have also been pushed by the American Christian far-right, such as Uganda, Ghana, and Peru. As anarchists, we know international solidarity across borders is key to all of our liberations, especially trans liberation.
Sunday
11:30am – 1pm
Make A Zine: One Page Zine Folds! – C
This lil workshop shows a few folds to make your own zine with 6 panels and a front and back cover- any story can be told in six panels! This is a great way to make info to give to friends family and mutual aid folks via inexpensive means- works for comix, info share, art farts (making art to release stress) and more! One of the most important tools in an anarchist tool box.
Power For The People: Portable Electricity & You – G
Long term action in these times need power. Electrical power. This will be a how-to for doing the things you want to, from mobile sound systems to lighting & power for encampment kitchens, med tents, etc but without doing the things you DON’T want to do – like catching tents on fire, frying equipment, blowing up your generator, etc. For the highly practical and logistic lovers out there, this is all about using mobile power sources, including a live test of some of the latest equipment, to their safer potential. Bring questions and topics you want to learn more about to assist in guiding what you want to see covered!
1pm – 2pm
Lunchtime Seasol Strategy Share – Outside
We use direct action to confront bosses and landlords who abuse their tenants/workers, and would like to share our strategy/methods to inspire and incite more class struggle, both within and outside our org.
2pm – 3pm
How To Research Your Landlord – C
Walk you through researching your landlord. Includes looking into the owner of your housing and identifying what else they own. See details already at bit.ly/landlord search.
Anarchism and Education – G
Join in on a short presentation and open-ended discussion on the intersections between anarchism and education. How can education be liberatory? How can anarchist pedagogy be relevant to state public education? How are/can anarchist educators engage in wider struggles?
3:30pm – 5pm
Penumbra City Live Play – C
Strangers in a Tangled Wilderness presents the anarchic TTRPG Penumbra City set in the mysterious world of Harrow. Join us for a short play session and demonstration of the game. We’ll be selecting a few attendees from the bookfair to take part in the play session. Come by our table for more information and to sign up to play. Signup on Saturday, September 28th. Find your friends. Kill the god king.
Anarchist History Nerd Convergence, Hosted by Historical Seditions – G
We invite all those spending far too many hours in dusty archives archives and library basements for open-ended conversation and connection-making. Share sources and research, tips and tricks, and the hottest tea from a century past. Participants are invited to discuss their research interests, point out gaps in our common understanding and challenges filling them, and examine the relevance of history to our contemporary struggles. We also hope to share ideas on making radical history more widely known.
